The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled over the last few seasons to find a complementary outside linebacker to play behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, and Markus Golden is the club’s latest attempt an an answer.

Free-agent signing Melvin Ingram III played well in 2021, but chafed at being the third wheel and requested a trade mid-season. In 2022, the Steelers swung a trade for Malik Reed from the Denver Broncos to attempt to fill that role. That didn’t work, either, with Reed under-performing when asked to play a bigger role following Watt’s injury.

This time around, the Steelers have signed another free agent in Golden. It’s early, but he’s saying all the right things about playing behind Watt and Highsmith, and he appears to fill one of the big gaps left in the Pittsburgh defense.

Alan Saundersof Steelers Now joined Chris Carter of the Locked On Steelers podcast to discuss Golden’s fit in the Steelers defense and locker room, and whether or not Omar Khan has done enough to get the Pittsburgh D back among the big dogs of the NFL.
