Locked on Steelers

Steelers Now reporter Chris Carter digs deep on the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL Monday through Friday all year long on Locked on Steelers. The retirement of Stephon Tuitt was breaking news Wednesday that reshaped how the Steelers need to approach the 2022 NFL season. The hope for Tuitt to return would’ve solved the questions on the Steelers’ defensive line after finishing ranked dead last in run defense in 2021 and brought back a pass rusher who tallied 11 sacks in 2020.

Now, new general manager Omar Khan faces his first big test: how to replace Tuitt on the roster. Tuitt’s retirement opened up over $9 million in salary cap space to bring the Steelers’ total space to over $21 million. Does that mean the team goes and gets a free agent defensive lineman? Or does Khan use that money to address a different position group with another signing or even a trade?
