Locked On: Would Steelers Really Go Back to Dan Moore at LT?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting healthy, with players like guard James Daniels, tight end Pat Friermuth, wide receiver Diontae Johnson, defensive end DeMarvin Leal, running back Anthony McFarland Jr., and tackle Dan Moore Jr. returning to practice action and seemingly set to play as the team exits its bye week.

But how will those players fit back into the slots in the roster they vacated? Some, like Daniels and Johnson, should be fairly cut and dried. Others, though, aren’t as clear.

The big one is at left tackle, where Moore was his usual self in the first four games of the season, with that self being not awful but problematic enough that general manager Omar Khan saw fit to move up in the draft to make sure the team could land Georgia stud Broderick Jones. Moore won the right to keep his job fair and square this summer with a solid training camp performance, but his future at that spot was sealed when the team called Jones’ name this spring.

When Moore went down with a right knee sprain against the Houston Texans, Jones entered the lineup. He stayed there against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5, earning his first career start. Jones wasn’t perfect, but he certainly seemed to be playing well enough to make it seem obvious that he would retain that starting slot even after Moore returned.

But if it was obvious to everyone else, apparently Mike Tomlin didn’t get the memo, as Moore was back working with the first team at practice. So will the Steelers really put their first-round tackle back on the bench?

Alan Saunders joined Chris Carter on the Locked On Steelers Podcast to discuss that, as well as how the team get the most out of Freiermuth and Johnson in their returns to the lineup.
