While Pouncey’s work in the community certainly makes him deserving of the honor, it does create somewhat of an odd situation since he served a suspension for his role in the brawl with the Browns.
The Walter Payton Award is presenters annually to the NFL player who best displays honor and dignity, often through charitable efforts, much the same way Walter Payton did throughput his career and life.
Pouncey’s efforts to improve relations between the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and the community is what likely led to his nomination.
