Metcalf-Russ Reunion in the Cards for Steelers?
With the Pittsburgh Steelers landing Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver DK Metcalf in a blockbuster trade on Sunday night, could this mean the Steelers are running it back with Russell Wilson? Just by reading the tea leaves, it’s certainly plausible.
Wilson and Metcalf starred in Seattle for three years and still remain close friends. Metcalf said in mid-November after Wilson took over for Fields: “Me, him and [Lockett] have a group text together where we keep in touch with each other. He’s been doing really well.”
NFL insider Jordan Schultz also posted on X that Metcalf’s girlfriend, Normani, recently revealed that Wilson and his wife, Ciara, were actually the ones who set her and Metcalf up. The two couples were together this past week at the Gold Party.
The Steelers and Metcalf have reportedly agreed to a five-year, $150 million deal. Metcalf, 27, totaled 66 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdown catches last season. He had one season remaining on the three-year, $72 million extension he signed with Seattle in 2022.
Since being drafted in the second round in the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf has averaged 4.5 receptions and 65.2 receiving yards per game. He’s surpassed 900 receiving yards during each of his six professional seasons, but his five touchdown grabs in 2024 were a career low. Metcalf missed two games last season with a knee injury.
In terms of touchdown receptions, Metcalf’s two best seasons in the NFL came with Wilson at quarterback. He was named second-team All-Pro and was a Pro Bowler in 2020. That was by far his best season of his career, recording 83 receptions for 1,303 yards (15.7 average) and 10 touchdowns.
Ian Rapoport said on NFL Network that Justin Fields remains “priority A” for the Steelers. But that Sam Darnold and Russell Wilson are still possible.
It will be interesting to see how things unfold. But the Wilson-Metcalf connection can’t be ignored.
