Mike Tomlin Coach of Year Odds Crash after Losing Streak
One month ago, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was in the thick of the race for the 2024 NFL Coach of the Year Award.
This week, his name is off the board on betting markets. That’s what a three-game losing streak will do in December.
According to odds posted by BetOnline, Tomlin started December with 5/1 odds to become the AP NFL Coach of the Year, an award he’s never won in his 18 seasons as Steelers head coach. At that time, he was behind favorite Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions and Kevin O’Connell of the Minnesota Vikings.
On Dec. 8 the Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns, but Tomlin still fell in comparison to the pair of NFC North coaches, dropping to 13/2.
Then, the Steelers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15, dropping Tomlin from the third-best odds to a tie for fifth at 16/1, moving him behind Dan Quinn and Sean Payton. Another loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16 moved Tomlin to 25/1, alone in fifth, with Andy Reid flipping ahead of him, and Payton dropping back down, as well.
Now, after a third straight loss to Reid’s Chiefs on Christmas Day, Tomlin is off the board entirely. Payton has also been taken off the board, while O’Connell has become a massive favorite.
As of Tuesday, O’Connell is the favorite at a whopping 1/12, followed by Campbell at 5/1, Reid at 22/1 and Quinn at 40/1.
O’Connell’s Vikings have rebounded from a 7-10 record in his second season in 2023 to a 14-2 start this year. They’ll play the Lions in Week 18 for a shot at the No. 1 overall seed.
Campbell’s Lions have steadily become a juggernaut in his four years at the helm. After going 3-13-1 his first season in 2021, they’ve improved every season, goin from 9-8 to 12-5 to 14-2. The Lions lost in the NFC Championship Game last season and are the current favorites to appear in Super Bowl LIX this February.
