The Mike Tomlin rumors have accumulated throughout the season, but a month ago, Jay Glazer, a close friend of Tomlin’s threw out there that the Washington Commanders should trade for Tomlin. Now that Ron Rivera is out, there is still speculation that Tomlin could head there.
So, SportsBetting.Ag released odds for the next head coach, and Tomlin is on the list with 33/1 odds. That’s far down the list, and a longshot. The favorite to land the job is Ben Johnson at 2/1 odds with Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh, and Mike MacDonald rounding out the rest of the odds.
Ex-Steelers senior defensive assistant Brian Flores is tied for fifth on the list with 12/1 odds, along with Aaron Glenn, Eric Bieniemy, Frank Smith, and Raheem Morris. Flores is on the odds list for most of the openings after an impressive opening season with the Vikings as defensive coordinator.
As for Tomlin, it seems unlikely he is not in Pittsburgh next year, but Glazer’s theory has to hold some water, and he did throw it out there.
“Hey Washington, he’s from Virginia,” Glazer said. “Perfect. I’m at least giving it a shot. I’m trying for it. If they decide to move away from Ron Rivera, you’ve got to swing away for a guy like that. If he’s on the hot seat, swing away. Mike Tomlin, he is, like I said, amongst his peers, he is “the guy.”
NFL head coaches are traded somewhat infrequently, but it’s not unheard of. Seven NFL coaches have been traded in the last 25 years, with a wide variety of compensation in return.
In 1997, Bill Parcells netted a first, second, third and fourth round picks along with $300,000 in his trade from the New England Patriots to then New York Jets. Mike Holmgren got the Green Bay Packer just a second-round pick when he went to the Seattle Seahawks in 1999.
The most recent trade came just this past offseason, when the New Orleans Saints traded Sean Payton to the Denver Broncos. Denver sent first and second-round picks to New Orleans and got a third-rounder along with Payton. But that is still highly unlikely.
