PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers slot corner Beanie Bishop was not in uniform for the Steelers-Bills preseason game at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday. He was in street clothes on the sideline.

Mike Tomlin revealed after the loss that the Steelers were being cautious with Bishop after he was limited for the team’s joint practice against the Bills on Thursday.

“Beanie was a little bit limited on our last workday here in Thursday against Buffalo, so we didn’t want a small problem to become a big problem,” Tomlin said. “Obviously the sand’s going through the hour glass and he’s got a big week ahead of him, but we didn’t want to jeopardize or compromise that, so we did what we thought was prudent tonight and did not allow him to participate.”

Beanie Bishop received first-team reps throughout training camp and the first preseason game. Thomas Graham Jr.  received starting reps with Bishop sidelined.

Bishop beat out vets Josiah Scott, the starter in the spring who was released early into training camp, Grayland Arnold and Thomas Graham Jr. for the job.

“I feel that I had a pretty good OTAs and minicamp,” Bishop said. “I knew I was going to get some reps. This many reps? I wasn’t really sure about.”

Four Steelers players suffered injuries against Buffalo — running back Jaylen Warren (hamstring), linebacker Payton Wilson (concussion), cornerback Anthony Averett (hamstring) and Tyler Matakevich (left ankle). Warren, Wilson and Averett did not return.

“From a health standpoint, Jaylen Warren had a hamstring in-game. I do not know the extent of it. He’ll be evaluated. I’ll have more information over the next couple of days. Payton Wilson was being treated for a concussion. Anthony Averett had a hamstring, as well. Some other bumps and bruises, but I think in most instances those guys returned to play.”

Steelers cornerback Anthony Averett suffered a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Saturday night’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, and will not return. Linebacker Tyler Matakevich also suffered a left ankle injury late in the third quarter, and got his ankle tapped on the sideline by the team medical staff.

Averett is the third Steelers player to leave the game with an injury –  joining running back Jaylen Warren and linebacker Payton Wilson.

Payton Wilson was evaluated for a concussion after delivering a hit in the third quarter. Wilson went into the locker room after being evaluated in the blue tent.

Buffalo Bills running back Ray Davis ran up the middle for eight yards and was tackled by safety Ryan Watts. It appeared that Wilson was caught in a friendly fire on the play.

Steelers running back Jaylen Warren left his team’s game against the Buffalo Bills with a hamstring injury and did not return.
