The NFL is morning the death of longtime official Wayne Mackie, who died Thursday night at the age of 62. Mackie served as a head linesman from 2007 to 2016, officiating eight playoff games, a pair of conference championships and Super Bowl 50. Upon his retirement from on-field duties, Mackie became NFL’s vice president of officiating evaluation and development in 2017.
“Wayne was passionate about the NFL and spent each day making a positive impact on all of us individually and contributing to our collective success,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Those who had the pleasure of knowing Wayne will forever remember his kindness, generosity and the genuine spirit he brought to all aspects of his life. The NFL has experienced an enormous loss – and we are deeply saddened. Our hearts are with Wayne’s family and loved ones during this tragic time.”
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin shared his condolences on Twitter on Friday.
“Wayne Mackie – Class human in every way,” Tomlin said. “Rest in Power.”

Mackie is survived by his wife, Tonya, and three daughters.
