NFL to Play Black Friday Game on Amazon Prime in 2023
The first NFL game to be broadcast on Black Friday this November will be free to all viewers, despite being distributed by Amazon Prime, the media company announced on Tuesday.
The game will be played this Nov. 24 on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the first time that the NFL will play a game on what has traditionally been a college football-dominated portion of the calendar.
The teams for the game have not yet been announced. The NFL will continue to hold three games on Thanksgiving itself. The additional holiday game is part of the new NFL rights packages that granted Amazon the exclusive Thursday Night Football broadcasts. There was no Amazon game on Thanksgiving in 2022, with the late game going to NBC.
“We’re excited to expand our relationship with the NFL and build a new holiday tradition for our customers with the first Black Friday NFL game,” Prime Video vide president Jay Marine said in a press release. “We’re so very proud of our Thursday Night Football production and all the teams in front of and behind the camera. As families look to spend time together over the holiday weekend, we are excited to provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy this new day of NFL action.”
The Black Friday game will kick off at 3 p.m. and though it will air through Amazon’s website, smartphone and smart TV apps, it will be free to anyone without a subscription to the streaming video service. The top Amazon broadcast crew of Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung will call the game. Charissa Thompson, Tony Gonzalez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Richard Sherman, Andrew Whitworth, Taylor Rooks, and Michael Smith will have pre- and post-game coverage live on location.
The Pittsburgh Steelers played once on Amazon in 2022, in their Week 3 game against the Browns in Cleveland.
