Odds: Steelers’ Mitch Trubisky off the Board as 1st QB Benched

How tenuous is the grip of Mitch Trubisky on the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback role? So shaky that you can no longer even bet on him being the first quarterback to be benched this NFL season.

According to odds released on Monday by, Trubisky, who had been the favorite, has been taken off the board for betting on the first NFL quarterback benched this year.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota is the new favorite at +250. Seattle Seahawks and former West Virginia quarterback Gino Smith is second at +300. Carolina Panthers starter Baker Mayfield is third at +450.

Trubisky‘s first appearance as the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday with marred by chants for the Steelers’ other quarterback, first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett.

Statistically, Trubisky has been underwhelming in his first two games as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback. He is 23rd in completion percentage, 28th in average net yards per attempt and 29th in passer rating after two weeks.

Pickett, Trubisky and Mason Rudolph battled throughout training camp and the preseason to be the Steelers’ starting quarterback, with head coach Mike Tomlin only naming Trubisky the starter the week before the regular season.

Since then, Tomlin has reportedly decided to give Trubisky a long leash as a starter. He said repeatedly throughout training camp that he was not going to be reactionary when it came to how he decided his starting quarterback. In speaking with the media on Monday, Tomlin stress patience with the position.

“I’m going to exercise appropriate patience and continue to teach and ask the guys who continue to learn in an effort to continue to push this train down the track and get better,” Tomlin said. “We don’t try to quell the noise. To be quite honest with you, we don’t care about the noise. We’re just working on the things that are within our control to have good days and to continue the progression of this group from a developmental standpoint, knowing that the outcome is going to be what we desire if we keep doing those things.:

Call some downfield plays for the guy to run before you blame him for not doing it. Mistakes are how you learn and are part of the game. Playing it safe means playing not to lose, which usually results in losing more than winning.

“Underwhelming” indeed. I still don’t understand why they spent $14M on this guy with an equally mediocre QB already on the team and the intent to draft a QB. Seems like a major strategic mistake.

Not Mitch Trubinskis fault. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada is the man to blame. This is exactly how Pittsburgh offense was last year. Now we got a new QB with the exact same things happening. It wasn’t big Ben last year either. If Pickett goes in the same exact thing is going to happen. I also feel there is an issue with the WRs not getting enough separation. Same as last year. So I’d look into the WR coach and OC Matt Canada for some changes

Tomlin is to blame! He Matt “I can’t coach for the life of me” Canada was picked by Mike. So why in hell aren’t people calling for Mike to explain himself. He fires coordinators that are good as he feels threatened by them. I know Tomlin hasn’t had a losing season in 16 years however with Ben, Brown and Bell we should have at least one more Super Bowl if not two. I think that the owner ship needs to think about not being mediocre but being super again! It’s like everyone wants to blame Ben, then the OLine or… Read more »

With our head coach still saying they have no intention of playing Kenny this year I’m lost on what their plan was. Why would you draft 2 QBs. Plus with you signing Mitch and draftingv3 QBs definitely shows Mason is not on their plans. So why did they go through this QB competition this summer. Why wouldn’t they trade or release Mason and keep the other QB you drafted instead of releasing him. I am hoping this is not going to be a wasted season.
