The oddsmakers are clearly putting more emphasis on the team’s recent run of play than on the last meeting between the teams.
The Steelers won fairly handily in the first matchup of the AFC North foes in Cincinnati this season, earning a 44-38 victory even after a late Bengals touchdown tightened the score.
Since that game, the teams have had nearly opposite fortunes. The Steelers won their next game against the wayward Cleveland Browns, but have since lost three straight against the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs — all playoff-bound teams.
The Bengals have won four straight since their home loss to the Steelers, beating the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Browns before winning an overtime thriller with the Denver Broncos on Saturday, to remain in playoff contention.
The Steelers have been underdogs eight times this season, and have done 5-3 against the odds as underdogs. They won the first five games of this season as underdogs outright, before failing to cover the spread in each of their last three losses.
The Steelers have been a home underdog three times this season, beating the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs by 19 points last week as 1.5-point underdogs.
The Bengals have been favored in 13 games this season, going 8-5 against the spread. They’ve been favored on the road five times this year, and have covered the spread in all five of those games.
The Bengals and Steelers will kick off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4 from Acrisure Stadium.
