UNITY TWP., Pa. —  Despite speculation, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan threw cold water on a potential wide receiver trade at training camp on Thursday.

“There is nothing going on right now,” Khan firmly said when asked about possibly trading for a receiver. “I’ll tell you this, when you have 32 GMs, conversations always happen, but there’s nothing ongoing right now.”

The Steelers’ season-opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 8 is 45 days away so a lot could change from now. Conversations will remain fluid.

“As I mentioned, we’re always going to have conversations with people,” Khan said. “If there’s an opportunity to evaluate a situation or player that’s out there, that’s what we’ll do. We’ll think about it, and if it makes sense, we’ll pursue it. If not, then we won’t.”

As it stands now, Khan feels good about the wide receiver room and is excited to see the group work in training camp.

“If there’s ever an opportunity to upgrade, regardless if (it’s) the receiver room or whatever room it is, we’re gonna look at it. But I feel good about the room we have right now,” Khan said. “We have a lot of talented players in there. Guys that are gonna contribute, guys who are going to do different things. The room for me, I’m excited about it. I’m excited to see these guys work. You know, it’s day 1.”

NFL insider Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post said last week that he believes the Steelers are financially set to make a run at either Brandon Aiyuk or Davante Adams. The Steelers have been tabbed as a potential landing spot for Aiyuk throughout the offseason.

“The Steelers are going to get another receiver. Whether it’s Brandon Aiyuk, whether it’s the Davante Adams scenario down the road. Whether it’s something else. I know they’ve budgeted in a way that they feel like they can execute one more big swing there,” La Canfora said during an appearance on The Jason Smith Show on Thursday.

Khan left the door open to adding a wide receiver after the end of the 2024 NFL Draft. He said that the team is in place that it can make a move to add to the position if it finds the right one, thanks to their recent restructuring of Alex Highsmith’s contract.

Warren Sharp of Sharp Football ranked the Steelers’ wide receivers group as the third-worst in the NFL. Only the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots receiving corps were lower.

“George Pickens has the talent to elevate the Steelers’ pass catchers if he fully lives up to his potential, but he needs to become more consistent,” Sharp wrote. “Pickens ranked 25th out of 46 qualified wide receivers in catch rate on catchable targets at 10 or more yards downfield last year.”
