Steelers All 90: RB Jaylen Warren Needs another Quick Splash

Steelers RB Jaylen Warren

All 90 is a Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 offseason roster.

30 • Jaylen Warren, rookie running back, Oklahoma State
5-foot-8, 215 pounds, 23 years old

Acquired: The Steelers signed Warren as an undrafted free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft on April 30, 2022.

Last season: Warren transferred from Utah State to Oklahoma State for his redshirt senior season, immediately won a starting role with the Cowboys and was named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award. He was also an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection.

Warren finished the season ranked 28th in FBS with 1,441 yards from scrimmage — 1,216 on the ground and 225 receiving. He led the Cowboys with 11 total touchdowns, all on the ground, and did all that despite missing Oklahoma State’s Big 12 Championship Game appearance with an injury.

College: Jumping up a level into immediate success has been something of a trend for Warren. Under-recruited out of high school, he went to Snow College for two years and became the 2018 NJCAA National Offensive Player of the Year and a juco All-American.

He transferred to Utah State in 2019 and played in 12 games for the Aggies, rushing 112 times for 569 yards and five touchdowns. In 2020, he took over a starting role before choosing to leave the program with his redshirt intact.

Camp outlook: The Steelers did basically nothing to address their running back depth this offseason, bringing back little-used backups Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland and two undrafted rookies in Warren and Duke alum Mateo Durant. Given how little the Steelers used their returning backs in 2021, it shouldn’t take much for one of the youngsters to leap up the depth chart in training camp.

Future: Warren signed a three-year rookie contract that will pay him $705,00 in base salary in 2022 and runs through the end of the 2024 season. He received a $12,000 singing bonus.
