The first game for the new Pittsburgh Maulers will take place in prime time, the USFL announced with the release of the league’s 2022 schedule on Monday.
The Maulers will face the Tampa Bay Bandits at 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, which happens to be Easter Sunday. Television details for the game have not been announced. The league’s game will be broadcast by NBC and FOX.
All regular season games will be played in Birmingham, Alabama at either Legion Field, the historic home of the Birmingham Stallions, or Protective Stadium, the new stadium built in 2021 for UAB football.
The 2022 USFL playoffs and championship game will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The league has not announced plans for any teams other than Birmingham to play games in their home markets, in 2023 or beyond.
The Maulers will be coached by former Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson. The team selected 35 players in the league’s inaugural draft in February. Eleven former Pittsburgh Steelers players are participating in the league, including Maulers safety and Central Catholic grad Arnold Tarpley III.
