Pittsburgh Maulers Pick QB Lindsey Scott Jr. in First Round of 2023 USFL Draft

Pittsburgh Maulers

The Pittsburgh Maulers selected Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. with the second pick of the first USFL collegiate draft Tuesday.

Scott joins an already-packed room of Maulers signal-callers, as head coach Ray Horton’s team already rosters Chase Fourcade, James Morgan, Connor Sampson, and Troy Williams. Horton told Steelers Now last week that there will be an open competition for the spot.

Whether that sentiment changes now that the team spent a high draft choice on another passer will be something to keep an eye on when the Maulers open training camp next month.

Scott was the 2015 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year after winning a state title with Zachary High School. He then attended LSU, East Mississippi Community College, and Missouri before landing at Incarnate Word.

This past season, Scott put up incredible numbers. He hit the mark on over 70% of his pass attempts for 4,657 yards, 60 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions. He had the most air strikes among Division I quarterbacks on both the FCS and FBS levels.

Scott should fit with what Horton and the Pittsburgh Maulers aim to do, which is speed the game up and put the ball in the air at a higher rate than they did last go-round.

The Michigan Panthers took offensive tackle Jarrett Horst (Michigan State) with the top pick, while the Houston Gamblers grabbed Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice with the third. Offensive tackle Mason Brooks (Mississippi) went fourth to the Memphis Showboats and wide receiver Tyler Scott (Cincinnati) to the New Orleans Breakers after that.

The other quarterbacks to go in the initial two rounds were Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan — who the Panthers added with their second turn — and Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez, to the New Jersey Generals.
