The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots currently hold the NFL record for most Super Bowl wins in the NFL’s history with six. Pittsburgh became the first team to win six Super Bowls when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII 27-23.

And on Sunday, the 49ers had a chance to tie that with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs. But after losing to the Chiefs, even after leading by double digits, they will have to wait at least another year before they can try to tie that record. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are inching closer with four Super Bowl wins all-time. Patrick Mahomes, specifically, has three Super Bowls, and he is only 28.

The 49ers have five titles from their eras under Joe Montana and Steve Young and could have catapulted right to the top of the list with a loaded squad this season, too. But Kyle Shanahan has yet to find paydirt, having led by double digits in the three trips he has made to the Super Bowl. Mahomes’ comeback was just another example.

The Chiefs had a lot working against them, with standout defensive lineman Charles Omenihu and elite left guard Joe Thuney out. In addition to that, the 49ers matched up well against the defense and should be able to get some traction on the ground. And the 49ers boasted a fantastic defensive line that gets ignored in the discussions of guys like Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, and other stars.

But for now, the Steelers and Patriots will remain tied with that record.

As for the Steelers themselves, they have not been back to the big game since 2010 when they lost to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. They want to change their fortunes and get back to that spot, but it will take maneuvering the quarterback position and Arthur Smith proving to be a hit as an offensive coordinator to get back to that point.
