Pittsburgh Steelers Preview
This will be the last chance for all three quarterbacks looking to win the Steelers’ starting job to make their case in game action.
Mitchell Trubisky has seen the fewest snap in the preseason game. Yet he is No. 1 on the depth chart after being signed as a free agent in the offseason.
Trubisky has completed 9 of 15 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
No. 2 on the depth chart is Mason Rudolph and he has the most passing yards with 220. Yet while Rudolph has hit on 26 of his 36 pass attempts and thrown for a pair of TDs, he seems like the odd man out in this competition.
Rudolph rallied the Steelers to victory last week, throwing a 1-yard pass to Tyler Snead with 1:56 left for the winning touchdown. Rudolph finished 17-of-21 passing for 127 yards and the TD, though all his action came against the Jaguars’ reserves.
Rookie Kenny Pickett seems to have the best chance of unseating Trubisky in the pecking order. The first-round draft pick is 19 of 22 for 171 yards and two scores. Fresh off leading Pitt to the ACC title last season, Pickett is the people’s choice for the job.
Lost amongst the quarterback competition in Jacksonville was the fact the running game was almost nonexistent. The Steelers managed just 24 yards on 14 carries with wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. (11) and Trubisky (10) accounting for 21 of those yards.
The Steelers are 14-4 in the preseason since 2017. They are 36-24 under Mike Tomlin in exhibition games since he became coach in 2007.
The Lions will rest starting quarterback Jared Goff on Sunday.
Backups Tim Boyle and David Blough will get all the snaps as both are vying to be QB2. Blough played the first half against Indianapolis last week and Boyle took over at the start of the second half.
Blough threw for 76 yards on 16-of-22 passing with a touchdown and an interception. Boyle also had a TD pass while completing 12 of 15 attempts for 99 yards.
The win was the first in the preseason for Lions coach Dan Campbell in five tries since being hired prior to last season.
Campbell admits he isn’t completely satisfied with either Boyle or Blough being his team’s safety net should Goff get injured.
Thus, the Lions could be looking for a new quarterback ahead of the final roster cutdown. Could Rudolph possibly be auditioning for Campbell on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Steelers Prediction
Both teams’ quarterbacks have reason to be motivated. However, the dangling carrot of a starting job should push the trio of Trubisky, Rudolph and Pickett to play well in the preseason finale.
Throw in the fact that Tomlin takes August games more seriously than most coaches and the Steelers look like the play in this one, even with the spread being a bit high for the preseason.
