UNITY TWP., Pa. — Diontae Johnson participated in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first training practice at Saint Vincent College Wednesday, but in a limited fashion. Johnson could be seen at the start of practice doing individual drills, but went off on his own when during team drills.

“Absolutely not,” Tomlin said when asked if he was concerned about Johnson’s participation. “I acknowledge that he was less than 100 percent of a participant. We’ll continue to manage the circumstance. Right now, my energy and focus is on those who are participating.”

Johnson’s looming contract situation is the obvious “circumstance” Tomlin referenced. And that doesn’t look like it will get resolved anytime soon. But that allowed more opportunities for rookies George Pickens and Calvin Austin III to make plays; and they both made the most of the first practice in Latrobe.
