Steelers HC Mike Tomlin Attends Boston College-Rutgers Game

Mike Tomlin was in attendance for the Boston College vs Rutgers game in Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon. While he usually would travel to cities as a coach, on this day, it was as a dad, as his son, Dino, plays for Boston College after transferring from Maryland.

There are still a few players who Tomlin will get up close and personal with as he watches his son play. For Boston College, that includes quarterback Phil Jurkovec and wide receiver Zay Flowers. Both of those players are set to be drafted in 2023. Other prospects on the Boston College team include nickel cornerback Josh DeBerry.

For Rutgers, wide receiver Taj Harris and safety Avery Young form the top two of the Scarlet Knights’  draft prospects. It is not a draft-abundant group there yet under Greg Schiano, but Young in particular has great measurables that could flash on his tape throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Tomlin may simply be doing some light scouting on the side. However, he gets to lay back and watch his son play football in the capacity of a dad. For someone who is around football all the time but rarely in that capacity, that is a special feeling for Tomlin and his family.

In the past, Tomlin has drafted teammates that his son played with at Maryland, including running back Anthony McFarland. That does not make it any more likely that the Steelers look at Boston College’s prospects any more favorably, but it does not help to have some actual experience in the locker room with those players.

Mike Tomlin will not the draft process for many months from now, but the Steelers scouting staff is already hard at work. It was long before this week when they likely already made out the list of players they liked, and now, they will scout players in live game settings.
