Steelers Get Elite Left Tackle in New Mock Draft

Steelers Paris Johnson

The Steelers would be elated if the scenario happens that Peter Schrager of the NFL Network thinks could happen, as Schrager has Ohio State tackle Paris Johnson Jr. falling right into their laps at 17th overall.

In recent months, this scenario has fallen out of favor with Johnson often being long gone before the Steelers pick. However, in this mock draft, Johnson is the third tackle off the board following Peter Skoronski and Broderick Jones. That leaves him ripe and ready to be picked by the Steelers, and Schrager notes that exact scenario.

“The Steelers like plucking prospects from Ohio State,” Schrager said. “Johnson is a versatile pass protector who can play right away and shouldn’t escape the top 20. I have Pittsburgh passing on Joey Porter‘s son, which just doesn’t feel right. Oh well.”

Yes, the Steelers do pass on Joey Porter Jr. Jordan Addison was on the board, too, but Johnson is exactly what they have looked for in a tackle in the offseason. If there is a dream scenario for Pittsburgh, plucking Johnson right at 17th overall is that dream. I have many doubts it happens since I think Johnson is going to be the first offensive lineman off the board. Regardless, Johnson has elite potential with his footwork and natural athleticism.

“I feel like I have good feet and I feel like the violence that I play with, too, out in space, is crucial,” Johnson said. “In order to get the body blows to succeed at tackle, when you’re on an island, over and over again, it’s those body blows and that violence out in space to slow your man down.”

If he can harness that athleticism and just mold the technique side of his game a bit more, Johnson has the chance to be a cornerstone player for the team in this scenario.
