Steelers Postgame: Blame Everybody for Blowout Loss

PITTSBURGH — No one outside of T.J. Watt should be spared the blame for Pittsburgh’s blowout loss to the 49ers. The Steelers looked outcoached and overmatched in each facet of the game. Their run defense looked porous, the pass defense got scorched, and the offense looked hapless. Even Pressley Harvin III, who had a marvelous preseason, came out with several bad punts in the first game.

So, blame whoever you want; it is probably well-earned for the Steelers in this matchup. They have a lot to think about, with high expectations for the team after the preseason. Kenny Pickett may have been the most concerning part of the entire game. From his process, accuracy, and pocket presence, Pickett snowballed the game into a pitiful performance and one of his worst as an NFL quarterback.

Sometimes, teams just lay duds this early in the season. Quarterbacks take time to get in rhythm and feel out the season in a live pocket. That can happen at times. But there is little excuse for a second-year quarterback coming out and hurting his team as much as he did on Sunday.
