Steelers secondary coach Grady Brown will be the defensive coordinator of the National team in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, according to a report by NFL Network.
Brown joined the Steelers following the 2021 season and has been the team’s secondary coach for two seasons. This last year, the Steelers were tied for the league lead in interceptions with 18, showcasing growth throughout the year under Brown.
With only two years of position coach work in the NFL, this is a big step forward for Brown. He was McNeese State’s defensive coordinator in 2020 but failed to work a game due to the cancellation of their season that year.
Grady Brown previously coached at Old Dominion, Louisville, Alabama State, Birmingham Southern, South Carolina, Southern Miss, and Alabama A&M and has been an NFL intern with Seattle and Kansas City during his coaching career.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Brown was a defensive back at Alabama A&M from 1995-98 and went on to play in the Arena Football League as a player.
Up to this point in his career, Brown has been instrumental in scouting some young defensive backs that the Steelers look to add to their team, such as Tre Norwood and James Pierre. Just like any coach for the Steelers, they send him around the map during scouting season.
The Senior Bowl is always an important week for the Steelers. Last year, they saw most of the quarterbacks there, but they always seem to be drawn to players that are there. With most of the scouting contingent and key members of the coaching staff expected to be down in Mobile in a little over two weeks, the hands-on experience that Brown will receive with some of the defensive players on the National players will be invaluable to Pittsburgh’s draft evaluations throughout the cycle.
