Power Rankings: Steelers 5th-Best Team in AFC?

Published

on

After five weeks of the 2023 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are ranked fifth in the AFC Power Rankings by Pro Football Talk and NBC Sports.

The Steelers are behind only the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills. They’re ahead of the Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans in the top 10 power rankings. The Cincinnati Bengals, Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots were not ranked.

The Steelers were ranked 11th overall in the entire NFL.

That might not be a surprise considering the teams’ records. The Steelers are 3-2 and in first place in the AFC North. If the playoffs started today, the Steelers would be the No. 3 seed, behind the Chiefs and Dolphins. The would host the No. 6 seed Baltimore Ravens in a Wild Card playoff game.

But the numbers beyond the record are far from promising for the Steelers. They are tied for the third-worst point differential in the AFC at -31 points. Through five weeks, the club is 28th in the NFL in scoring, 27th in yards and 26th in yards per play. They’re 19th in scoring defense, 31st in yards allowed and 25th in yards per play allowed.

So picking them as the fifth-best team in the conference in a power ranking right now seems like a bit of a stretch.

“It’s easy to criticize. It’s hard to win. And the Steelers have somehow won three games,” Florio wrote.

What do you say, where would you rank the Steelers among the top AFC teams?
