Report: Browns QB Baker Mayfield Still Not Cleared to Return from Shoulder Injury, Could Miss Game vs. Steelers Sunday

Browns QB Baker Mayfield

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is not yet cleared to return and is in danger of missing next Sunday’s game between the Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a report by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Mayfield suffered a torn labrum and a fractured left (non-throwing) shoulder in Week 6. He missed Cleveland’s Thursday night game against the Denver Broncos, which Case Keenum started and won.

Mayfield will attempt to wear a harness in practice this week, but must pass steps in rehab before he can get to that point, La Canfora reports. Mayfield may need surgery to repair the labrum tear, something that he is hoping to forestall until the offseason.

The first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield has a 26-25 record as Cleveland’s starting quarterback in the regular season. This season, he has thrown 173 times, completing 116 (67%) for 1,474 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. His completion percentage and 97.8 passer ratings are both career highs.

Keenum, 33, is in his second season as Mayfield’s backup, but Thursday was his first start with the team. He has started 63 career gams with Houston, St. Louis/Los Angeles, Minnesota, Denver and Washington. Keenum completed 21 of 33 for 199 yards and a touchdown against the Broncos.

The line for Sunday’s game has not been revealed yet with the uncertainty at quarterback for the Browns. The Steelers will visit the Browns for a 1 p.m. kickoff at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.
