Report: Roman Wilson Avoids Serious Injury, Expected to Miss at Least Two Weeks

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson, who was carted off with an ankle injury at Tuesday’s practice, is classified as week-to-week, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Sources told Fowler that Wilson will be “OK.”

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Wilson is expected to be out at least two weeks.

Wilson suffered the ankle injury after being tackled on a jet sweep by cornerback Anthony Averett in seven shots at Tuesday’s practice. Wilson left practice on a cart. Head coach Mike Tomlin said after practice that he had no update on the seriousness.

“It was unfortunate we had an injury today,” Tomlin said. “Roman hurt his ankle on a tackle. And so, we’ll have more information regarding the length of his status in terms of how long he might be out.”

The reports from Fowler and Dulac are encouraging, however. It’s not ideal for a rookie to miss training camp and preseason games, but it’s obviously better than a long-term injury. The wide receiver room is already thin as it is, so the Steelers will definitely need Wilson back for at least their home opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 8.

Wilson, a third-round pick out of Michigan in this year’s draft, turned heads at training camp. Wilson had his best day to date as a pro on Friday, and then repeated that feat on Saturday, combining big plays with an innate ability to get open, even on busted plays and in scramble drills. The talents the Steelers saw in the young Wolverines product are staring to show on the practice field, and for a receiver as physical as he is, it might get even better when the pads go on.

Roman Wilson showed back up on the first play of the second team period on Saturday. Getting some run with the first team, he got loose behind Bishop for about a 25-yard gain down the right sideline. Justin Fields made an excellent pass to hit him in stride.
