Fitzpatrick is the second Steelers player in three days to test positive for the coronavirus. Starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tested positive on Saturday.
If Fitzpatrick is vaccinated, he will have to have two consecutive negative test separated between 24 hours, and following the conclusion of any symptoms, before he can return to the team.
If he has not been vaccinated, he will have to be away from the team for at least 10 days, which would rule him out for Sunday’s game at the Los Angeles Chargers. If Fitzpatrick is unable to play, rookie Tre Norwood is the only other free safety on the Steelers’ active roster.
Fitzpatrick and Roethlisberger are the first two positive COVID-19 tests the Steelers have had this season. It is unclear if the cases are related.
