The Steelers signed Walker on March 25 after a strong spring season with the New York Guardians of the XFL. He led that league with 4.5 sacks and also had 19 tackles, five tackles for loss and nine quarterback hits in five games.
Walker worked behind converted defensive end Tyson Alualu and returning backup Daniel McCullers at defensive tackle for the Steelers, and given the team’s overall lack of depth at the position, likely has a strong case for a practice squad spot.
Walker is the third player to be released by the Steelers since the end of training camp on Friday, joining outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper and tight end Kyle Markway.
The team’s roster now stands at 77 players. All NFL teams must be down to 53 players by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
