Report: Steelers Release LB Tuzar Skipper

Steelers OLB Tuzar Skipper

The Steelers have released linebacker Tuzar Skipper, according to a report by Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com.

Skipper, 25, just finished his second training camp with the Steelers after joining the club as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo in 2019.

It’s also the second time the Steelers have cut Skipper just before the outset of the season. After a strong rookie preseason, he made the team’s initial 53-man roster last September, but was waived prior to Week 1.

Skipper was claimed by the New York Giants and spent six weeks on the active roster in New York. He was then waived, added to the Giants practice squad, and eventually re-signed by the Steelers on Nov. 19.

The Steelers signed him to a two-year contract for the 2020 and 2021 seasons on Dec. 30.

He played in six games with the Giants last season, recording three tackles, one-half sack and a fumble recovery.

Skipper had been behind returning starters Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt, reserve Ola Adeniyi and third-round rookie Alex Highsmith at outside linebacker throughout the team’s training camp. The Steelers also recently signed veteran linebacker Jayrone Elliott.

Skipper is the first player to be cut by the Steelers after the close of their training camp on Friday, and with his release, the team’s roster stands at 79 players. All NFL teams must cut down from 80 players to 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
