Report: Steelers to Sign former EMU WR Mathew Sexton

The Steelers will sign wide receiver and kick returner Mathew Sexton, according to a report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Sexton was undrafted in 2020 coming out of Eastern Michigan and did not sign with a team, but played in The Spring League and also worked out with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots after running a “low 4.3-second” 40-yard dash at a pro day last week, according to Pelissero.

Sexton caught 100 passes for 1,335 yards in his four-year career with the Eagles, averaging 13.4 yards per catch and scoring nine touchdowns. The speedy receiver was also a solid kick returner early in his EMU career, averaging 16.8 yards on 21 returns in 2016 and 2017.

The 5-f00t-11, 175-pound Sexton will join former Georgia wide receiver Tyler Simmons, another 2020 draft eligible player that the Steelers have signed this spring after a pro day.

Those two will compete for playing time with a wide receivers room that will return starters JuJu Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson, impactful role players Chase Claypool, Ray-Ray McCloud and James Washington. Practice squad receivers Anthony Johnson and Cody White will also return./
