The Steelers are trading for Rams wide receiver Allen Robinson if he is able to pass a physical, according to a report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Robinson comes from the Rams after spending previous years with the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars throughout his career. The 29-year-old receiver out of Penn State is due $15 million this season, but the Rams will $5 million while the Steelers will pick up a portion of he other $10 million of the contract.
In 10 games in 2022, Robinson caught 33 passes for 339 yards and 3 touchdowns. However, over his 110-game career, Robinson has amassed over 5000 yards and 500 receptions in his storied career. The team met with multiple wide receivers in the NFL Draft but it seems that they made the move to try and capitalize on Robinson and what he could potentially bring to the team.
Someone else like Cedrick Wilson could have made sense for the team but Allen Robinson has inside-out versatility that gives the Steelers more options for what to do with their offense. Matt Canada has not made the slot a big thing in the offense, but Robinson along with Diontae Johnson and George Pickens hopes to change that. With Kenny Pickett heading into his second year, the team needed to surround him with potential weapons and protection and Robinson feels like one move to potentially do just that.
The trade compensation is still not known, but Robinson has to pass a physical in order for the trade to go through. Should he pass that physical, Robinson will now have a new team. At this point, it seems that the need is not entirely crossed off the list in the NFL Draft, either, as there are still players that fit the bill and Robinson only has one year left on his deal. Robinson should start and add to the offense.
