The Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to be a player for big-time free agent quarterbacks this offseason, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

With quarterback Ben Roethlisberger likely entering the final game or games of his career, the Steelers will be going a different diffraction at the game’s most important position in 2022, but don’t expect that to be a big splash move.

Rapoport said the most likely scenario is that the team will re-sign restricted free agent Dwayne Haskins, draft a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, and let those two players compete with Mason Rudolph for the job this summer.

Rudolph has played one game in each of the last two seasons in relief of Roethlisberger, losing at Cleveland last season and tying with the Detroit Lions this year. Haskins has been a healthy scratch while running the scout team in his first season in Pittsburgh.

Rapoport did not say when the Steelers plan to select a quarterback in the draft, but he mentioned Pitt passer Kenny Pickett, who is widely seen as a first-round pick. The Steelers will draft no higher than No. 19 in the first round, pending the results of this weekend’s playoff games.
