The Pittsburgh Steelers will try to get a new contract done with quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, according to a report by Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Fields, who started six games and played in four more as a backup to Russell Wilson in the 2024 season, is set to become a pending free agent in March.

But Breer reported that the team might move even quicker than that, looking to lock Fields up for the 2025 season quickly, even if it’s not as the team’s starting quarterback.

“Wilson and Justin Fields are both free agents,” Breer wrote on Monday. “Will either be back in Pittsburgh? There was frustration with Wilson down the stretch, so I’m not sure how far the Steelers will be willing to go to keep him. Meanwhile, the team would love to keep working with Fields, but it might not be as a starter. I’d heard before the playoff game Saturday that the playoffs would likely help set the course. Based on how the offense played …”

It’s unclear if Fields would be willing to return to the Steelers if he was not guaranteed a starting role. Fields and Wilson competed for the starting job in training camp this past summer, but Wilson won it despite dealing with a calf injury that cost him almost all of camp, and an aggravation of that injury cost him the first six games of the season.

Still, when Wilson was healthy, head coach Mike Tomlin turned back to the veteran, a move that was praised for most of the season before Wilson’s game his a rough patch down the stretch, with subpar performances in each of the last four regular season games, as the Steelers skidded into the playoffs.

Wilson and Fields and third-stringer Kyle Allen will all be unrestricted free agents in March, so it would behoove the  team to make at least one quarterback move quickly, but it’s uncertain if Fields would want to come back for such a deal.
