UNITY TWP., Pa. —  Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was a full participant on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a calf injury during the team’s conditioning test on July 24, but the team lost strong safety DeShon Elliott to an in-practice injury.

The Steelers have been gradually working Wilson back over the last week. Calf injuries can be tricky sometimes, and given that Russell Wilson is 35, the Steelers were very cautious in not rushing him back. He split first-team reps with Justin Fields during the team’s first practice of their first preseason game week on Tuesday.

“It was about not taking steps backwards as we move forward,” Mike Tomlin said when asked about increasing Wilson’s workload after Tuesday’s practice.

Wilson said that he intends to play at least some this preseason, and that he feels good after his first full practice post-injury on Wednesday. Wilson has been ruled out for Friday night’s preseason game against the Houston Texans.

Nose tackle Breiden Fehoko (arm/shoulder) and strong safety Elliott (lower body) suffered in-practice injuries on Wednesday. Both did not return. Elliott left via a cart. Cornerback Darius Rush suffered a right foot injury during practice but returned.

Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith (groin) did not practice on Wednesday. Highsmith has been ruled out for Friday night’s preseason game against Houston, but the injury doesn’t seem serious. The Steelers are just playing it safe with Highsmith, and there’s no need to play him in a preseason game anyway.

Rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson (left ankle) and safety Nate Meadors (hamstring) also did not practice.

Wilson ditched the boot for the first time on Sunday since suffering a high ankle sprain in his left ankle on July 30. Wilson being out of the boot just a few days after the injury is probably a positive sign that the rookie wide receiver could be back before the end of training camp.

Inside linebacker Patrick Queen (foot/ankle), offensive tackle Broderick Jones (right elbow), outside linebacker Kyron Johnson (hamstring tightness), outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon (undisclosed) and defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal (right leg) were all full participates on Wednesday.

Outside linebacker Markus Golden received a vet day off.
