The Pittsburgh Steelers finally landed the bonafide No. 1 wide receiver they’ve been searching for, trading for Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf last Sunday. However, it may be partially thanks to a player that might not even be on the team in 2025.

During his introductory press conference on Thursday, Metcalf revealed that free agent quarterback Russell Wilson helped sell Pittsburgh to him.

“Last year, I think like halfway through the season, me and Russ had a conversation about how it was living here,” Metcalf said. “And he just told me that I would love it here. I’m waiting to find that out.”

Of course, Metcalf didn’t have a ton of control over where the Seahawks traded him to, but he did have the choice in signing a massive extension, which he did in the form of five years for $150 million.

Money talks, but that was still quite the bold move by Metcalf since the Steelers only have quarterbacks Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson under contract for the 2025 season.

It could turn out that the seed Wilson planted in Metcalf could be one of the reasons why Pittsburgh’s search for another wide receiver has finally come to an end.

So while the Steelers and their fans may not love the idea of Wilson returning in 2025, he may have still played a role in their future success.

The Steelers could also still come around on the idea of reuniting with Wilson, but that will only happen if they lose out on the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes, which could go on for another month.

Metcalf also shared that Wilson didn’t say anything about teaming back up in Pittsburgh when they recently talked on the phone about his new engagement.

“We haven’t talked about his future here,” Metcalf said. “But I talked to Russ yesterday, proposed to my fiance, and he was the one that connected us, so he was just telling me congratulations, giving us a congratulations on that.”

In the meantime, Wilson has been weighing his options, which has included trips to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday and New York Giants on Friday. Maybe both sides will get the happy ending they have been looking for after all.
