Russell Wilson Reflects on Time with Steelers: ‘Special Place for Me’

Despite things not working out, Russell Wilson had nothing but good things to say about the Pittsburgh Steelers during his introductory press conference with the New York Giants on Wednesday afternoon.
“Obviously Pittsburgh was a special place for me,” Wilson said. “Pittsburgh brought me so much love, man. I have so many teammates that I’m super close with. Guys like T.J. (Watt) and Cam (Heyward), Miles Killebrew.”
Wilson was also asked how he felt about the Steelers and Giants seemingly waiting on Aaron Rodgers’ decision before New York moved forward with him.
“Aaron Rodgers is a tremendous football player,” Wilson said. “I’m focused on right now. What we can do here. That’s been my focus.”
Wilson is excited to take on the new opportunity with Big Blue. He also expects to be QB1.
“I expect to be the starter. And to be able to come here and rock and roll every day. To be able to lead,” Wilson said.
Wilson signed a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed with the Giants.
Wilson, 36, spent the 2024 season with the Steelers in what was a tale of two halves. After returning from a calf injury in Week 7, Wilson helped rattle off six wins in seven games. But his play took a downturn on the team’s five-game losing streak to end the season.
During that span, the Steelers failed to score more than 17 points in every game, a streak that hasn’t occurred since Chuck Noll’s first season in 1969. It’s safe to say that left a sour taste in the Steelers mouths and played a role in Wilson not returning.
Accord to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Wilson always wanted to re-sign with the Steelers, right up until agreeing to a deal with the Giants.
Wilson is happy to land in the Big Apple, though. He’s already embracing his new city. He’ll be at Madison Square Garden tonight for the Knicks game.
