UNITY TWP., Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (calf) split first-team reps with Justin Fields on Tuesday. It was the first time in training camp that Wilson threw passes during team periods. Previously, he was only throwing during individuals and one-on-ones.

Wilson also participated in warm-up sprints for the first time in camp, which is encouraging. Calf injuries can be tricky sometimes, and given that Russell Wilson is 35, the Steelers are being very cautious in not rushing him back.

“It was about not taking steps backwards as we move forward,” Mike Tomlin said when asked about Wilson’s increased workload.

During seven shots, Wilson threw a fade to George Pickens for a touchdown. He also connected to tight end Darnell Washington for 25 yards on a corner route during the team period.

Rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson did not practice on Tuesday. Wilson ditched the boot for the first time on Sunday since suffering a high ankle sprain in his left ankle on July 30. Wilson is still not participating in practice with the Steelers, but being out of the boot just a few days after the injury is probably a positive sign that the rookie wide receiver could be back before the end of training camp.

Inside linebacker Patrick Queen (foot/ankle), outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon (undisclosed), linebacker Kyron Johnson (hamstring tightness), tight Rodney Williams II (AC joint sprain) and defensive back Grayland Arnold (undisclosed) all dressed but were limited.

Outside linebacker T.J. Watt, defensive tackle Cam Heyward, and left guard Isaac Seumalo all received vet days off.

Tomlin said outside linebacker Alex Highsmith suffered a groin injury during practice. Defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal and linebacker Tyler Murray also got banged up, but it didn’t seem to be anything serious.
