Schefter: ‘No Indication’ Steelers Will Move On from Mike Tomlin
The Pittsburgh Steelers have no intention of moving on from head coach Mike Tomlin, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said during an appearance on Sunday NFL Countdown.
While breaking down the Steelers’ Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, Schefter reiterated that the Steelers have fielded at least one trade call from a team that was interested in trading for Tomlin, but that team was told that Tomlin has a no-trade clause and that the Steelers have no interest in moving on from Tomlin at this time.
With the Steelers suffering another embarrassment in the first round of the NFL playoffs, Schefter said that that more teams may reach out, but it sounds like the Steelers are expected to retain Tomlin as their head coach moving into the 2025 season.
“Pittsburgh hasn’t given any indication that it wants to move on from Mike Tomlin, and this has been the most patient franchise, not just in football, but maybe in sports,” Schefter said. “There’s no indication they want to move on from Mike Tomlin now.”
Tomlin and the Steelers just agreed to a three-year contract extension this past offseason that has not yet kicked in. That contract also contains the no-trade clause. While Schefter was adamant that the Steelers have no interest in moving on from Tomlin, he did not address whether the longtime Steelers coach would be open to preferring a new destination. ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky made the case that Tomlin should want a trade last week before the loss to the Ravens.
On Saturday, Tomlin became first Super Bowl winning NFL head coach to lose six straight playoff games. The Steelers have not won a postseason game since 2016 and they haven’t advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs since 2017.
Tomlin is the 11th-winningest head coach in NFL history, with a 183-107-2 regular-season record. He has gone 18 consecutive seasons to start his career without suffering a losing season.
