Should Steelers Draft a CB in Round 1? | Steelers Morning Rush

Steelers CB Will Johnson

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it’s how large the Steelers need at cornerback is entering the 2025 NFL Draft.

Through free agency, Omar Khan has taken two steps to fill in the gaps left behind when Cam Sutton and Donte Jackson departed, bringing in veteran former Philadelphia Eagles starting outside cornerback Darius Slay and ex-New York Jets two-way corner and special teamer Brandin Echols.

So Echols can replace Sutton, Slay can replace Jackson, and call it day? Probably not.

Slay is 34 and is a short-term solution. Echols, while projects to be a better fit inside, struggled while playing outside cornerback with the Jets. The stop-gap signings will give incumbent depth options like Cory Trice and Beanie Bishop another chance to win a job.

But there’s no reason they couldn’t add a rookie to that mix as well, especially if someone like Michigan’s Will Johnson falls to them. Alan breaks it down.
