Spears: Shedeur Sanders Could Veto Draft Day Destination

ESPN analyst Marcus Spears thinks Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders could veto his landing spot in the 2025 NFL Draft.

One of the biggest storylines of the 2025 NFL Draft will be where Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders lands. ESPN analyst Marcus Spears thinks his father, Deion Sanders, could play a role in his draft day destination.

“If Shedeur ends up in the wrong organization, we might see fireworks, and I think we will,” Spears said on ESPN’s “Get Up.” “It matters where you go in the league. This is his son, not only one of the top prospects in this draft. Don’t be surprised if he vetoes something if it happens, man. We’ve seen it one time from the royal family of the NFL. This is the second royal family once Shedeur is in there.”

The NFL saw a similar scenario play in 2004 with quarterback Eli Manning. Manning and his father, Archie Manning, stated that he would refuse to play for the San Diego Chargers, if drafted by them.

The Chargers then proceeded to select Manning with the No. 1 overall pick, but they had a deal in place with the New York Giants, who would draft and trade quarterback Phillip Rivers, a 2004 third-round pick, 2005 first-round pick and 2005 fifth-round pick for Manning.

As of now, the three most likely destinations for Sanders seem to be the Cleveland Browns at pick No. 2, New York Giants at pick No. 3 and New Orleans Saints at pick No. 9.

None are ideal situations as there is a reason they are all selecting in the top 10 picks and Sanders has not been shy in expressing his interest in joining the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sanders sounded in love with the idea of playing for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who he said resembles his dad, following his pre-draft visit to UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

However, that dream seems a bit far-fetched since Pittsburgh isn’t slated to pick until No. 21. That may not matter if Sanders is willing to do whatever it takes to land there, though.

Sanders and his father have yet to make a request like the Manning’s, but there is still plenty of time with nine days until the 2025 NFL Draft.

Sanders could prove to be the Steelers long-term answer at quarterback after throwing for 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions over the past two seasons at Colorado.
