Cam Heyward Says He Will Return This Season, Unsure of Timetable
PITTSBURGH — Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward vowed to return from his core muscle surgery this season. Initialliy reported as being out to as much as 8 weeks, Heyward expressed optimism about an early return a few weeks ago. While that may come to fruition or not, he has no exact timeline for a return. Instead, Heyward is vigorously attacking rehab to get back onto the field.
“I can’t really speak on the injury yet. Just working as hard as I can to get back,” Heyward said.
Heyward’s podcast, Not Just Football, discussed the injury and the road to recovery two weeks back when he vowed to return early. It will involve rehab, but Heyward is off crutches and working back by rehabbing already. He thinks he can shatter the eight-week timeline and return to the field far before that date.
“There’s timetables out there but I’m not a regular person,” Heyward said. “Every injury I’ve been a part of, I’ve been cleared earlier than expected. It’s not going to stop me from working. Timetables are for other people, I make my own.”
In his absence, players such as Montravius Adams, Keeanu Benton, and DeMarvin Leal have earned more playing time. Still, Cam Heyward is vying to get back sooner because the team is far better with him than without him. The earliest to expect him is likely against the Jacksonville Jaguars at the end of October, but a more realistic date would be against the Green Bay Packers on November 12th.
