The Steelers have activated cornerback Justin Layne from the COVID-19 Reserve List and released cornerback Breon Borders.
Layne, 22, was originally placed on the COVID-19 list on July 29. With his activation, running back Jaylen Samuels is the lone Steelers player on the COVID-19 Reserve List.
A second-year player out of Michigan State, Layne was the Steelers’ third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He is expected to be the primary backup to starters Joe Haden and Steven Nelson at outside corner this season.
Borders, 24, signed with the Steelers in April after previously spending time with the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Redskins.
The Steelers remain at the 80-man training camp limit after the moves. The team has eight cornerbacks in camp: Haden, Nelson, Layne, slot corners Mike Hilton and Cam Sutton, first-year player Alexander Myres and rookie free agents Trajan Bandy and James Pierre.
UPDATE, Wed., Aug. 12, 6 p.m.: Borders was claimed from waivers by the Miami Dolphins.
