All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2021 offseason roster.
29 • Shakur Brown, rookie cornerback
5-foot-10, 190 pounds
Acquired: Signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent on May 7.
College: Brown made 12 starts over two seasons at Michigan State, with 10 coming at outside corner and two coming at Nickel back.
He redshirted in 2017 and played a reserve role in 2018. Brown missed six games in 2019 due to injury and the Spartans played just seven in a COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.
He led the FBS in interceptions per game with .71 and was tied for third in FBS with five total picks. Brown was named an All-American and first-team All-Big Ten.
Camp outlook: Brown’s slide down the draft board was surprising, and he was considered a good pickup for the Steelers as an undrafted free agent.
Brown will join the crowded slot cornerback competition, where he’ll have to unseat a more experienced player like Antoine Brooks Jr., Arthur Maulet or James Pierre or a drafted player like Tre Norwood in order to see playing time right away.
Future: Brown’s rookie contract runs through the end of the 2023 season, after which, he’s scheduled to become a restricted free agent.
