All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2021 offseason roster.

40 • Tegray Scales, first-year inside linebacker
6-foot, 227 pounds

Acquired: Signed to the Steelers’ practice squad on Nov. 11, 2020 for his second stint with the club. Re-signed for 2021.

Last season: Scales played with the XFL’s Dallas Renegades in the spring of 2020 and then spent two weeks on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad before signing with the Steelers following a spate of injuries at the inside linebacker position on Nov. 11.

Scales was elevated to the active roster for Week 14 and 15 and then given an outright promotion to the 53-squad on Dec. 26 for the final two games of the regular season.

He played mostly on special teams and did not record any statistics.

Career: Scales signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana in 2018. He was waived after training camp and caught on with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

The Steelers signed Scales for the first time in January 2019 and he spent training camp with the team before being released on Aug. 31. He did not catch on with another NFL team and entered the XFL Draft.

College: Was named a two-time All-American and was a two-time All-Big Ten honoree.

As a senior in 2017, Scales led the Hoosiers with 12.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Camp outlook: There are too many players ahead of Scales on the depth chart for him to have a realistic chance at a roster spot without some injuries, but depending on how things shake out, he could end up on the practice squad as a trusted special teams depth option.

Future: Scales will be an exclusive-rights free agent after the season.
