Steelers All 90: ILB Ulysees Gilbert III
All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2021 offseason roster.
54 • Ulysees Gilbert III, third-year inside linebacker
6-foot, 230 pounds
Acquired: The Steelers drafted Gilbert in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Last season: Gilbert played in two games early in the 2020 season, recording one tackle against Philadelphia in Week 4, but suffered a back injury that landed him on injured reserve midway through the season.
Gilbert returned from IR to play at Buffalo and at Cincinnati in Weeks 14 and 15, adding four more tackles to his season total, before again being injured and shut down for the season.
Career: Gilbert appeared in seven games as a rookie in 2019, making five tackles, before being shut down with a back injury that season, as well.
College: Tied an Akron record by playing in all 51 games of his four-year career at Akron, as an immediate contributor on special teams as a freshman and then a three-year All-MAC starter at linebacker.
Camp outlook: With Gilbert and starter Devin Bush both injured in 2020, fellow backups Robert Spillane and Marcus Allen got the most extensive playing time of their careers.
Now, Bush and Vince Williams are back as the projected starters, but Allen, Gilbert, Spillane and fourth-round pick Buddy Johnson will provide the most extensive depth the Steelers have had at the position in some time.
Future: Gilbert’s rookie contract runs through the end of the 2022 season, after which, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent.
