Steelers All 90: SS Terrell Edmunds Back as Starter, But for How Long?

Steelers SS Terrell Edmunds

All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2022 offseason roster.

34 • Terrell Edmunds, fifth-year strong safety, Virginia Tech
6-foot-1, 217 pounds, 27 years old

Acquired: The Steelers drafted Edmunds with the 28th overall selection in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Last season: Started all 17 games at strong safety, recording 89 tackles, eight for a loss, one sack, two interceptions and six passes defended. He played 1,145 snaps of defense, or 98.2% of the Steelers’ total defensive snaps, which was the most of any player.

Career: Edmunds was an immediate starter as a rookie in 2018 and has missed just one game since being drafted. He set a career high in 2019 with 105 tackles, while forming a strong partnership with Minkah Fitzpatrick. In 2020, hetarted 12 games and played in 15 as the Steelers’ starting strong safety. His 68 tackles finished third on the team. Edmunds also had on sack, two interceptions and eight passes defended.

College: Edmunds was a three-year starter for Virginia Tech and a two-time All-ACC selection. He had 59 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks as a senior in 2017.

Camp outlook: The Steelers declined Edmunds’ fifth-year option for 2022, then brought him back on a one-year deal for less money. Despite his massive usage levels last season, the front office did not show confidence in his abilities with the way it treated his contact situation.

The Steelers also brought in Damontae Kazee, another experienced starter, to the safety position. It seems that the team is looking for a future beyond Edmunds at the position, and is usage could decrease in 2022.

Future: Edmunds will be a free agent after the 2022 season. His one-year contract is worth $2.5 million, but only $152,500 is guaranteed.
