Steelers WR Cody White

All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2022 offseason roster.

15 • Cody White, third-year wide receiver, Michigan State
6-foot-3, 215 pounds

Acquired: The Steelers signed White as a street free agent on Sept. 24, 2020 after having previously been with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants during his rookie offseason.

Last season: White was cut coming out of training camp, but was added to the practice squad after a game-day recall in Week 3, was permanently called up to the active roster on Oct. 9, following early season injuries to Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and James Washington. After JuJu Smith-Schuster was lost for the rest of the regular season, White became the team’s regular No. 5 wide receiver.

White made his NFL debut against Cincinnati in Week 3, making two catches for 17 yards. On the season, he played in 15 games and caught five of six targets for 33 yards. He also played on 24% of Steelers’ special teams snaps last season. White was scratched for the wild card game at Kansas City after Smith-Schuster returned from his injury.

CareerWhite spent the entire 2020 season on the Steelers’ practice squad and was not elevated for any games. He signed a future contract for the 2021 season.

College: White set a school record for freshmen at Michigan State with 490 receiving yards in 2017. He also scored four touchdowns. His junior year was his most productive, catching 66 passes for 922 yards and six touchdowns, after which he left early for the NFL Draft, though he went undrafted.

Camp outlook: Outside the four wide receivers that seem locks to the make the team (Claypool, Johnson, George Pickens and Calvin Austin III), White and Miles Boykin are the two with experience as outside receivers. White, Boykin and Gunner Olszewski are also experienced special teamers, while Steven Sims and Anthony Miller are primarily slot receivers. How those battles play out and how many receivers the Steelers keep is still going to be decided at training camp.

Future: White is playing on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract worth $825,000 and will be an exclusive rights free agent after the 2022 season.
