All 91 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 91 members of the Steelers 2019 training camp roster.
24 • P.J. Locke, rookie safety
Last year: Played in 14 games and made 13 starts at safety for Texas as a senior after starting eight and nine games as a nickel corner over the previous two years.
Stats: Was third on the Longhorns with 77 total tackles. Also had 5 1/2 tackles for loss, one-half of sack and forced two fumbles. Had one interception and three passes defended.
Accolades, Highlights:
Named honorable mention All-Big 12 as a senior.
Camp outlook: One of the last undrafted players to sign after the conclusion of the draft, Locke looked to have an inside edge at a roster spot after the Steelers did not draft a safety.
But the training camp defensive backfield is a crowded one, with players like Marcus Allen, Dravon Askew-Henry, Marcelis Branch and Kameron Kelly. Locke will need to find a way to stand out of the crowd to stick.
Projected role: Locke played a little bit of everywhere at Texas, and he also played a good bit of special teams. If he can contribute in the third phase, and be a versatile backup at slot corner and free safety, he has the potential to unseat a veteran on the 53-man roster.
