Steelers Announce Donation to United Way to Help Pandemic Response

The Pittsburgh Steelers are donating $100,000 to the United Way Emergency Basic Needs Fund to assist in the fight against the novel coronavirus-caused COVID-19 pandemic, the organization announced Monday.

“The United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has always played a major role in helping our community,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said. “During these unprecedented times in our country, we want to make sure those in need have the financial support to rally in our community. We are grateful for the efforts of all the heroes, volunteers and first responders during this crisis, and hope this donation will assist the United Way in their efforts.”

The United Way is helping local families that have been financially impacted by the virus, while also working alongside the Allegheny County Health Department to spread general information and answer questions the community might have.

The Steelers have joined the other two professional sports teams in town in their humanitarian efforts during the pandemic. The Pirates have partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank providing meals to families, and the Penguins announced a plan to pay their full and part-time arena and service employees with the NHL season on hiatus.
