AT STAKE

The injury bug has thrown the doors to the AFC North wide open for the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow both lost for the season to injuries this week.

The Steelers can take advantage, but only if they take care of business against Bengals journeyman Jake Browning after they failed to do just that against Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

AFC NORTH STANDINGS

Overall AFC North AFC Head-to-head
Ravens 8-3 3-2 5-3 CIN 2-0, CLE 1-1, PIT 0-1
Browns 7-3 3-2 4-2 BAL 1-1, CIN 1-0, PIT 1-1

Bengals 5-5 0-3 1-5 CLE 0-1, BAL 0-2

 STEELERS INJURY REPORT

Steelers safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick and Keanu Neal will both miss the game, as well as nose tackle Montravius Adams.

Cornerback James Pierre is listed as questionable, and it is unknown if he will play in this game. The Steelers are healthy other than that, with a few others on injured reserve.

Meanwhile, the Bengals will be without two huge pieces: wide receiver Tee Higgins and cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. Linebacker Germaine Pratt remains questionable. That’s all in addition to, of course, losing Burrow for the remainder of the season.

TRANSACTIONS

The Steelers elevated linebacker Tariq Carpenter from the 53-man roster for this game. They signed linebacker Blake Martinez to the active roster early this week, but it seems that Martinez is likely to sit and not caught up to speed yet. They also signed linebacker Myles Jack and defensive back Eric Rowe to the practice squad for depth purposes while placing safety Elijah Riley on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.

The Bengals placed Burrow on injured reserve with his injury and elevated backup quarterback A.J. McCarron to be the backup to Browning in this game. They also signed undrafted free agent and former XFL champion Drew Plitt.

THE LAST TIME

The Steelers and Bengals got into a track meet at Acrisure Stadium, with Kenny Pickett and Joe Burrow dialing up big shot after big shot. But eventually, the Bengals high-powered offense pulled away to win 37-30. George Pickens nabbed a touchdown, and Tee Higgins went off for almost 150 yards receiving. Najee Harris added two touchdowns for Pittsburgh on the ground.

STEELERS-BENGALS SERIES

The Steelers lead the all-time series, 68-39-0, though recently, the Bengals have taken the lead in this rivalry. The Steelers have lost three of the last four meetings in this series since Joe Burrow leaped after his rookie season. And their last time winning was on the road in Cincinnati in the opener a year ago in that theatrical overtime win.

Most of this series has intermittent periods of domination, usually by Pittsburgh. Before this stretch, the Steelers had won 11 in a row in the series, for example. So, this reflects a likely close game. Backups have done it in this game; ask Ryan Finley and Duck Hodges.

PITTSBURGH CONNECTIONS

The ties between the Steelers and Bengals start with a few former Pittsburgh Panthers and Pittsburgh natives. Wide receiver Tyler Body is from Clairton and played at Heinz Field as a high schooler, and would continue that in college, becoming a prolific wide receiver at Pitt. Long-snapper Cal Adomitis would play at Pitt, too, coming out of Central Catholic to man that spot.

Safety Nick Scott will represent the Penn State Nittany Lions in this matchup. He has started for most of the season at safety and Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell both left the Bengals in the offseason.
